A research team wants to determine whether there are any prenatal factors associated with cleft lip in families that have no previous history of cleft lip. The research team decides to focus on all newly-diagnosed children with cleft lip at their children’s hospital in the last 2 years. They will then compare this group to a matched group of children without cleft lip. All subjects with a family history of cleft or other craniofacial syndromes will be excluded from the study. All subjects’ families will be sent a survey assessing for prenatal factors that may have been associated with cleft disease.
