Females are not expected to have mesonephric ducts. No malformation would be expected. In females, the mesonephric (Wolffian) ducts degenerate and the paramesonephric (Mullerian) ducts develop early in fetal development. The paramesonephric ducts then fuse, giving rise to the fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the upper 1/3 of the vagina. Failure of the paramesonephric ducts to fuse results in malformation of the female's internal reproductive structures. Associated conditions range from bicornate uterus, in which the uterus has 2 "horns," to uterus didelphys, in which the patient has 2 separate vaginas and cervices. A hysterogram, in which dye is injected into the uterus and visualized using x-ray, may be used to diagnose conditions associated with failed fusion of the paramesonephric ducts. Incorrect Answers: Answer 1-3: These structures arise from the paramesonephric ducts. Answer 5: The lower 2/3 of the vagina arises from the urogenital sinus.
