The patient is likely lactose intolerant. This is a condition that does not change the morphology or appearance of cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Lactose intolerance is the result of a deficiency in the lactase enzyme, either due to a genetic mutation of the gene or a decreased production of lactase. The symptoms of lactase deficiency (osmotic diarrhea, abdominal discomfort) can be resolved by avoiding foods and beverages containing milk. In addition, lactase supplements may also prove effective for treating lactase-deficient patients. Incorrect Answers: Answer 1: Celiac disease would most likely show villous atrophy. Answer 2: Crohns disease would most likely show skip lesions, fissures, and possibly fistulas. Answer 3: Tropical sprue would have findings similar to celiac disease. Answer 5: Ulcerative colitis would most likely show atrophy of the colonic mucosa, amongst other manifestations.
