Transference is best shown in the example where a patient has a positive or negative feeling toward the physician as a result of the "transferring" of attributes from someone else in the patient's life onto the physician. Transference can be used as a diagnostic tool in psychotherapy. Transference is in contrast to countertransference, in which a doctor transfers feelings from someone in his/her life onto the patient. Analyzing countertransference in the therapeutic relationship gives valuable insight into what patients are attempting to elicit in the therapist. A classic example is a therapist who is sexually attracted to a patient then subsequently tries to understand the countertransference mechanism of the attraction, and resultantly looks at how the patient might be eliciting this emotion. Levy and Scala discuss the historical origins of transference and its interpretations. They describe the concept of transference as a social-cognitive and information processing model which may indicate conflict and defensive processes.
